Obituary for Roy Gene Reger

September 9, 1943 - October 8, 2017
Markleville, Indiana | Age 74

Roy Gene Reger, 74, of Markleville, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 8, 2017, after a short battle with ALS.

Roy, known by many as "Ropin' Roy Reger", spent a great deal of time in Oklahoma throughout life, learning skills that would mould him into becoming one of the top calf ropers of his day. Calf roping was Roy's passion and he was a PRCA Gold Card holder for many years. Roy placed at some of the top rodeos of his day, including winning the calf roping event at the Fort Worth, Texas rodeo of 1978, among many others. Roy owned, trained, and finished several great calf horses, "Booger", "Missy", "Grey Eagle", "Wasp", "Trigger", and many in between.

In Roy's later years he was a PRCA Rodeo Judge, judging predominately in Great Lakes Circuit rodeos. Roy also judged High School Rodeos, and enjoyed mentoring many young ropers. Roy hosted team roping competitions at his indoor and outdoor arenas in the 90's. He was also a skilled farrier, and spent time teaching the trade to his two children.

Roy's fun loving attitude, humor, infectious laugh and unbelievable life adventures will be remembered by all that knew him, loved him, and learned from him.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Margeret Reger of Markleville. Survivors include his life partner, Molly Gunason; son, Stetson (Lucy) Reger; daughters, Denise (Andy) Tatman; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of formal services, Roy's family and friends have made plans to share his cremated remains by horseback, in some of his most beloved places.
